On city and suburban lots it is often possible to change over to more wildlife friendly vegetation in as little as one day. Many birds prefer larger shrubs that produce berries. If you want to see these birds right out your window, plant a courtyard of larger shrubs around your viewing window.

By providing food plants, instead of bird feeders, you will have fewer rodents to contend with on your property. Birds are healthier eating native fare anyway. Instead of putting out chemical cool aid humming bird feeders, plant the flowers that hummingbirds like.

Consider other plants, too. Cup plant, a native, holds water in its leaves for birds to drink. Even weeds like mullein and purslane have a purpose; birds love the seeds.
